Mercy—and Justice

Getting it is easy;
Giving it is what’s difficult.
But if you don’t give it,
In the end you don’t get it.

I’m talking here about God’s mercy.  (What else do you talk about on Divine Mercy Sunday?)

Getting God’s mercy is easy—just ask Thomas the Apostle.  Jesus forgave him for his sin of disbelief the moment he repented and said those famous words, “My Lord and my God!”  Thomas didn’t have to beg Jesus, or bargain with Jesus, or grovel in the dirt before our Lord agreed to show him mercy.  All Thomas needed to do was to express his repentance in some way, and forgiveness was his.

This is the core message of Divine Mercy Sunday: that every sin can be forgiven; that every sinner can be saved; that God’s mercy (as today’s responsorial psalm reminds us) “endures forever”.  This is also the message St. Faustina gave to the world through her diary.  There she wrote about the private revelations she received from Jesus about God’s mercy during a seven year period, beginning in 1931.  One of those revelations included a vision of Jesus with two rays of light coming out of his heart.  Jesus asked her to have a painting done replicating the vision, and to have it signed with the words, “Jesus, I trust in you.”  We, of course, have a copy of that painting here in our church where the tabernacle used to be.

But it’s not only important to receive mercy (like Thomas the Apostle did); it’s also important (and necessary!) to extend mercy to others—which is the hard part.  As I said at the beginning of my homily, “getting” mercy is easy; “giving” mercy is much more difficult.  But in spite of the fact that it’s difficult, it’s not optional—at least according to Jesus.  In fact, if we don’t show mercy to others (or at least make the effort to do so in our lives), we will cut ourselves off from the mercy God wants to give us.  As I said at the beginning, “If you don’t give it, in the end you don’t get it.”  Jesus himself said as much in Matthew, chapter 6.  There, immediately after he gave us the Lord’s Prayer, he said, “If you forgive others, your heavenly Father will forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive you.”

Notice, out of all the petitions in the Our Father—“Thy kingdom come”; “Thy will be done”; “Give us this day our daily bread”; etc.—Jesus went back to and reiterated just one.

The one about forgiveness: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

That must mean it’s EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!

Of course, it’s also important for us to remember in this context that practicing forgiveness and mercy does not mean that we should totally ignore or dispense with justice.

In fact, sometimes dispensing with justice is the most unmerciful thing you can do for a person—and for the people in that person’s life.  I came across a great example of this just the other day on the web site of the Washington Post.  There was an article there about a 20-year-old man from Texas named Eric Couch.  Maybe some of you know the story.  On June 13, 2013, when he was 16-years-of-age, Eric Couch killed 4 people just outside of Ft. Worth, Texas, when he plowed his father’s Ford F-350 pickup truck into a group of men and women on the side of the road who were trying to help a stranded motorist.  He seriously injured some others who were there, one of whom is now paralyzed and can communicate only by blinking.

Oh, and did I mention that Couch was drunk at the time? His lawyers claimed he was suffering from something they call “affluenza”—supposedly a condition which made him incapable of telling right from wrong because of his parents’ wealth.

The judge’s sentence?  Probation—a probation which Couch violated two years later by drinking and then fleeing the country with his mother!  The two fled after a video appeared online of Couch consuming alcohol.  He was eventually caught, taken back to the United States and sentenced—to just two years in prison (or, as the Washington Post article put it, 180 days “for each of the four people he killed” in 2013).  He was released a couple of days ago.

Only two years in prison for consuming alcohol as a minor, killing 4 people while driving recklessly and intoxicated, violating parole, fleeing the country illegally and causing an international incident.

There are some who would call that “mercy.”  Personally, I’d call that “stupidity”—in this case, “judicial stupidity”.  Letting this young man off so easily and not giving him the time or opportunity to work on his addiction and other personal issues was NOT merciful!  It would have been merciful if, in June of 2013, they had said to Couch, “Yes, we’ll give you the opportunity to change your life for the better since you’re a minor, but in your present condition you’re a danger to yourself and to everyone else in society.  Consequently, we need to remove you from society for an extended period of time so that you can deal with your demons and give us a valid reason to allow you to return to a normal way of life.  If not, you’ll have to remain incarcerated.”

That would have been the most merciful thing they could have done for this troubled young man—and for the people in his life.

There’s a beautiful prayer that was written by St. Faustina that has this line in it: “Help me, O Lord, that my ears may be merciful, so that I give heed to my neighbors’ needs and not be indifferent to their pains and moanings.”  Sometimes our neighbors need our mercy in the form of compassion, patience and understanding, but there are other times when our neighbors need our mercy in the form of “tough love.”  Eric Couch has needed the latter since 2013.  I hope and pray that someday he finally receives it—for his own sake, and for the sake of everyone else who shares the highway with him in the future.

Easter and the Search for Happiness

Do you know what the most popular class is at Yale University this semester?  Actually, it’s not only the most popular class there this semester, it’s also the most popular class in the school’s 316-year history.  One thousand, one hundred and eighty-two students (roughly a quarter of the school’s population) are enrolled.  It’s held every Tuesday and Thursday at the university’s concert hall. It’s held there because that’s the only place on the Yale campus that’s big enough to accommodate such a large group.

So, what is this course that so many have signed up for, in spite of the fact that for most of them (if not all of them) the course is just an elective, and not a requirement? 

Microbiology?
Chemical Engineering?
Astrophysics?

No, not even close.  The most popular course at Yale this year—and in the entire history of the university—is a course on HAPPINESS!  It’s called, “Psychology and the Good Life,” and it’s taught by psych professor Laurie Santos.  Recently Dr. Santos was quoted in the New York Times as saying she believes her course is so popular because so many Yale students “had to deprioritize their happiness to gain admission to the school.”

One Yale student, I would say, got to the root of the matter when he said that enrollment in classes like this is “a cry for help.”

By the way, I should mention at this point that positive psychology or so-called “Happiness 101” courses like this one can also be found at other colleges and universities today.  It’s not a phenomenon that’s unique to Yale.

Now, please don’t misunderstand me here.  I don’t think these courses, per se, are bad.  Hopefully, they do a lot of good.

But what I want to know is: what is going on—or not going on—in the emotional and spiritual lives of these young people that causes them to have such difficulties dealing with the normal circumstances of daily living?  Aren’t these supposed to be some of the smartest young men and women in America right now?

Perhaps the students at Yale would do well to go back and explore their roots—and here I mean their academic roots.  Many people these days are into that kind of thing, are they not?  A lot of people in our country right now are having their DNA analyzed so they can discover their ethnic and national roots.  And many of them are surprised at what they find when they get the results (or so they tell us on the television commercials!).

Well, here I’m suggesting that these students at Yale rediscover their educational roots.  If they do, I think some of them, at least, will be equally surprised by what they discover.

Do you know what the original purpose of Yale University was?  Do you know why it was founded back in 1701?  I don’t think most people do.  Yale, like other Ivy League schools, was originally founded to train Protestant ministers!  In the case of Yale, it was to train ministers of the Congregational Protestant Church for ministry.

Oh, how things have changed!  (Although they still do have a divinity school there.)

Now, what if it were possible to bring back some of the original graduates of Yale—to bring them into the world of 2018 as they were on the day of their graduation in the early 18th century—and allow them to speak to the Yale students of today?  If we could do that, if it were possible to do such a thing, what do you think those original graduates would say?

I’ll tell you what I think they would say.  I think they would say,

You mean, you don’t know?  You young men and women don’t already know?  You don’t already know the meaning of life?  You don’t know where to look to find happiness and peace and strength during your time on this earth?  We knew those things three centuries ago!
We knew that we were created in God’s image, and that the Lord loved us with an eternal love.  That fact alone gave us great joy and happiness!  We knew that the meaning of life was to live in a personal relationship with Almighty God, and to follow his plan for our lives.  We knew that there would be obstacles and difficulties and problems that we would face along the way, but we also knew that we could rely on the Lord to help us deal with those things.  We knew the words of St. Paul from Scripture—“I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me”—and we knew that we should apply those words to our own lives.We knew all these things because we believed that Jesus Christ was risen, and alive, and with us!  We believed in the very depths of our hearts that Jesus had conquered sin, Satan and eternal death by his resurrection on Easter Sunday, and that he would share that risen life with us even here on this earth—although we knew we couldn’t experience the fullness of it until we got to heaven after we died.We knew all these things because we were taught them in our families, and in the churches we worshipped at every Sunday—and from our studies at Yale.What, exactly, are they teaching you in the 21st century at our alma mater?
Oh, if they only knew!

Actually, they probably do know.  I believe that those who are living with the Lord in eternity know a lot about what’s going on down here on earth.

The great St. Augustine once said, “Oh Lord, you made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”  He said that after his conversion—after his conversion from a hedonistic lifestyle that would have made Hugh Hefner proud.

Augustine had a restless heart.  So do those students at Yale.  And so do you and I.  The restlessness never goes away completely in this life; it will only end completely when we see the Lord face to face in his kingdom.  But much of it can be taken away here if we understand the meaning of life and act on that understanding.  In other words, if we understand the importance of developing a personal relationship with God and of seeking to do his will every day.

The very first graduates of Yale University knew that.  It’s why they were training to be ministers.

I hope the teachers of these “Happiness 101” courses make it clear to their students that if they want to find a measure of happiness on earth in the midst of all the stress and all the suffering, they will need to develop a strong spiritual life.  Psychological insights, as important as they might be, are no substitute for a personal relationship with the Lord of the universe!  For a Catholic, they can never be a substitute for a personal relationship with the risen Christ: a relationship that’s nourished by prayer and the sacraments.

I hope and pray that you, personally, believe that—because it’s the truth.  If you do believe it, of course, then I (or some other priest) will obviously see you at Mass next weekend—and every weekend thereafter.

Peter’s ‘Rough Start’ in the Priesthood, and what that means for Priests Today

Peter’s priesthood had a rough start.  After Jesus gave the apostles the power to consecrate the Eucharist at the Last Supper (when he said to them, “Do this in remembrance of me”), Peter almost immediately got into a verbal dispute with Jesus (we heard about that a few moments ago in this gospel text from John 13).  A little later that same night he was reprimanded by our Lord, fell asleep on the job, denied his Savior three times and ran away in fear.

Not exactly what I would call “a promising ministry”.

This is why you need to pray for your priests.  Every day!  You see, we priests have been given a great gift—a great power.  We have the power to call upon Almighty God, and have Almighty God respond!  We call upon the Lord to become present to us at Mass, and that’s exactly what he does!  God the Son responds by becoming present to us—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity!  We say, “I absolve you from your sins,” and the worst of sins committed by the worst of sinners are immediately taken away.  We have been given the power to act “in persona Christi” (in the person of Jesus Christ himself!) when we celebrate the sacraments. 

And yet, we retain our humanity—warts and all!  Consequently, if we’re not careful, and vigilant, and prayerful, and disciplined, we can become just like Simon Peter on Holy Thursday night, and give in to our weaknesses.  And, believe me, we all have them. 

The Catechism puts it this way:
This presence of Christ in the minister [here meaning the priest] is not to be understood as if the latter were preserved from all human weaknesses, the spirit of domination, error, even sin. The power of the Holy Spirit does not guarantee all acts of ministers in the same way. While this guarantee extends to the sacraments, so that even the minister's sin cannot impede the fruit of grace, in many other acts the minister leaves human traces that are not always signs of fidelity to the Gospel and consequently can harm the apostolic fruitfulness of the Church.
I’ll give you one example tonight of this phenomenon, one example of how easily we priests can give in to our weaknesses.  Recently, a big controversy erupted at my alma mater, Providence College.  It involves a 22-year old senior Resident Advisor named Michael Smalanskas (I think I’ll just call him “Michael S” from now on—that last name is a real tongue-twister!).  Michael’s “sin”—his horrible, reprehensible, politically-incorrect sin—was to post a bulletin board in his dorm upholding traditional marriage.  On the top of the board it says “Marriage: The Way God Intended It”.  Then at the bottom it says, “One Man” on one side, and “One Woman” on the other.  There are a couple of good quotes on it, one of which is, “Marriage should be reinforced, not redefined.”  Another is from Pope Francis, who said, “We must reaffirm the right of children to grow up in a family with a father and a mother.”  There’s even a quote from Jesus in the Gospel of Mark: “And the two shall become one flesh …”

There’s no attack on anyone, no name-calling, no hateful, vulgar language—just a basic affirmation of the truth: the truth that the Catholic Church has taught for 20 centuries, and which, until a few years ago, almost everyone (including atheists) believed.

Now, given the fact that Providence College is a Catholic school run by the Dominican Fathers, there should be no problem with a student publicly supporting traditional marriage in this way—right?

Wrong! 

Michael S has been threatened, and harassed, and publicly vilified on campus by some of his fellow students since he did this.  A few weeks ago, someone even put a cartoon of him being sodomized on the wall of the bathroom of his dormitory.  In one article I read he was quoted as saying, “I couldn’t even go brush my teeth for several nights without facing a mob in my hallway.”

Of course, the president of PC, Fr. Shanley, and the many other priest-professors there at my alma mater immediately came to the defense of Michael S.  Right?  And, like good professors, they used this incident as an opportunity to educate their students, and clarify what the Catholic Church really teaches about those who experience same-sex attraction:
  • ·         that they’re children of God, made in his image;
  • ·         that they are loved with an eternal love, just as they are;
  • ·         that they’re redeemed by the blood of Christ;
  • ·         that they’re called to holiness, and, ultimately, to eternal life with God in heaven;
  • ·         and that they deserve the same respect that every human being deserves. 

These priests went on to tell their students that it’s no sin to experience same-sex attraction, but it is sinful to engage in sexual activity—of any kind—outside of marriage (which, of course, can only be between one man and one woman).

This is what Fr. Shanley and the majority of priest-professors at PC did for their students in response to this controversy on campus: they defended traditional marriage, and helped their students to understand the “what” and the “why” of Church teaching on this issue.

Right?

Wrong—again!

That’s what they should have done, but didn’t do. 

Instead far too many of them have been either silent or weak in their responses. For example, in the letter he wrote to the PC community last week, Fr. Shanley said, “It belongs to a Catholic college to consider the views of those who disagree with the Church’s teaching in the spirit of the disputed question.”

Yes, that’s right.  For a comprehensive education, it’s important for you to consider opposing views (like Thomas Aquinas did in his Summa Theologica)—but first you need to be grounded in the truth, like Thomas Aquinas was grounded in the truth!

But many of these young students aren’t!  They don’t understand the truth about marriage, so they see the teaching of the Church as just one opinion among many other opinions.  Thus they have no problem rejecting it.

As I said at the beginning, we priests need prayers—lots of prayers, because it’s very easy for us to be like Peter on Holy Thursday night and give in to our human weaknesses (as I’ve hopefully made clear in this homily).

And I’m not just pointing the finger at Fr. Shanley and the Dominicans at PC here; I’m also pointing the finger at myself.  I’m as weak as anyone else, and I know there have been times when I’ve allowed my weaknesses, and not my faith, to guide me in my ministry.

Of course, I do find hope—for myself, for the priests at PC, and for all priests—in the fact that Peter’s priesthood didn’t end on day 1!  Yes, he began in weakness and sin on Holy Thursday night in Jerusalem, but he ended in strength and virtue and holiness many years later in Rome.  A rough start, but a strong finish. And, in between, Peter learned to “live strong” in his priesthood, by the power of God’s grace.    

So, please, pray for your priests!  Pray for them to become strong in their faith, and to live strong in their faith, and to finish strong in their faith, so that they can help you (and all the people of God) do the same thing.

Is Jesus Worth It?

Of the four gospel accounts of the Passion, St. Mark’s (the one we just heard) is the shortest—which, of course, means that my homily can be much longer today.

Just kidding.

Today I’ll focus on just one, simple question.  It’s a question that every Christian faces during Holy Week each year: Is Jesus Christ worth it?  To me, is Jesus Christ worth it?

We definitely know how the woman who anointed Jesus at the house of Simon the leper 2000 years ago would have answered that question.  It’s clear from the gospel reading we just heard.  As we were told a few moments ago, this woman came into Simon’s house with an alabaster jar filled with perfumed oil.  She then broke the jar (which itself cost more than “a few bucks”) and poured the oil on Jesus’ head.  To which some of those who were present responded, “Why this waste?”

“Why has there been this waste of perfumed oil?  It could have been sold for more than three hundred days’ wages!”

“Three hundred days’ wages”—do you realize how much that is?  Three hundred days is the better part of a year.  To put this in modern terms, it would be like somebody who makes $60,000 a year today spending $50,000 of it on one bottle of perfume—and then using ALL of that perfume on one person.

Be clear about it, my brothers and sisters, this perfumed oil was a lot more expensive than “Chanel No. 5”!

Obviously this woman thought that Jesus was worth a lot—that Jesus was worth everything—that Jesus was worth everything she had to give!  Probably that’s because Jesus had already done something special for her.  Perhaps at some point during his 3-year ministry Jesus had healed her of an illness, or forgiven her sins, or delivered her from the power of Satan, or taught her the truths that were now guiding her life.

Or all of the above!

We don’t know for sure, but it must have been something along those lines.

Which brings us to consider ourselves as we begin this Holy Week.

Recall the question I posed a few moments ago: Is Jesus Christ worth it?  It’s the question every Christian faces on Palm Sunday: To me, personally, is Jesus Christ worth it?

Is he worth the extra time I will need to take, and the extra effort I will need to make, to enter into the spirit of this most important week of the Church’s liturgical year?  Is Jesus worth putting aside my worldly concerns—especially on Holy Thursday and Good Friday—to participate in the sacred liturgies that are designed to deepen my relationship with him?  Is he worth my making time for extra personal prayer and Scripture reading during the next seven days?

Hopefully, we will answer like that woman did—with a resounding yes!

“Yes, Jesus, you are worth it!  In fact, you’re more than worth it!  You loved me into existence, you suffered for me, you died for me, you saved me, you gave me the hope of living forever with you in eternal bliss.  You are worth my love, my time, my talent, my treasure, my attention—and everything else I have to give.”

For those of you who would answer in that fashion, here’s the schedule of Holy Week events here at St. Pius:

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we will have morning Mass, as usual, at 7am.  We will have Eucharistic Adoration all day on Tuesday.  We will have Stations of the Cross at 6:05 on Tuesday after Benediction. 

Confessions will be heard during our Wednesday Holy Hour, from 5-6pm.  We will have Morning Prayer Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the regular Mass times.  And, most important, we will have the Liturgies of the Triduum on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings: the Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be at 7pm on Thursday, followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the church hall until 11pm.  On Friday we will have the celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 7pm, and Stations of the Cross twice: once outside at noon (weather permitting), and then at 3pm here in church.  And finally, we will have the first Mass of Easter—the Easter Vigil Liturgy—at 7:30pm on Holy Saturday night.  (Please note: There will be no 5pm Mass next Saturday.)  Masses on Easter Sunday will be at the normal Sunday times: 7, 8:30 and 10:30am.

I hope and pray that you’ll make the effort to be at some of these events (at least) during the next seven days.  Jesus, after all, is definitely worth it.
